Planners to determine stadium's future

The University of Dallas, in conjunction with the City of Irving and Southwest Premier Properties, has commissioned a study of the land surrounding Texas Stadium. Dallas Cowboys will move to a new stadium in Arlington in 2008, leaving Texas Stadium and its surrounding areas free for an alternative use, Bob Galecke, UD senior vice president of finance and administration, said.

Students taking risks on Northgate, study says

Students crossing Northgate Drive are not practicing common sense pedestrian rules, according to an engineering study conducted by Kathleen Mullins Jost, transportation engineer of Irving public works and transportation department. "Pedestrians have been observed crossing Northgate without looking, not using the crosswalk, walking down Northgate in the roadway [and] crossing Northgate at various locations," she said.

Women's coach leaves UD to teach soccer at UT Tyler

Stefani Webb, head women's soccer coach, is resigning Feb. 18 to take the position of head women's soccer coach at University of Texas at Tyler. The new position will allow Webb to spend more time with her husband and her five-year-old daughter, Taylor. Leaving the university has been difficult for her, Webb said.

Author to discuss slam poetry

In honor of Black History month, students are invited to learn how hip-hop artists have promoted a new urban dialect, slam poetry. Von, author and vocalist, is a guest speaker for the poetry event titled SLAM! The Unspoken Word. The event organized by SPUD will take place 7 p.m., Gorman Faculty Lounge, Feb. 15.

Liturgical conference recognizes art professor's work
Lyle Novinski, art department chair, was recently honored for his artwork at parishes throughout Texas. The 40th Annual Southwest Liturgical Conference, which meets to study implementation of the liturgy, presented Novinksi; Dr. Bob Hurd, teacher and composer of liturgical music; and Bishop Joseph Delaney of the Fort Worth diocese, with Faithful Servant Awards.

French movie showing tonight

Modern languages department is showing a French film tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the modern languages lounge in upstairs Carpenter. The film, titled A Man Escaped and directed by Robert Bresson, will be shown in French with English titles. Based on a true story, the film recounts a resistance fighter's daring escape from a Nazi prison just hours before he was to be executed.

Jewish professor discusses role at Catholic university

Pope John Paul II's criterion for a professor at a Catholic university can make responsibilities of a Jewish professor trying, Dr. Joshua Parens, UD associate philosophy professor, said last week at Dinner & Discourse, What it is like to be a Jewish professor at a Catholic University? Nostra Aetate, the papal declaration on the relationship of the church to non-Christian religions, refined the traditional Catholic orientation toward Jews, Parens said.
