George Washington once said, "Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." This was just one of the quotes presented by Dr. Edward P. Stringham in his Wednesday lecture entitled "The Economics of Politics - Reasons Why the Government May Not Act in Your Best Interest."

Texans for Haiti

In a corner of Haggar, what started as a modest pile of clothes and supplies to be sent to Haiti became a humongous collection, including school supplies, shoes and toys needing to be sorted. On Saturday and Sunday, there was an amazing relief effort organized by Texans for Haiti.

Annual Aquinas lecturer discusses Hegel and Aquinas
This past Thursday evening, before the festivities of Groundhog, students gathered in Lynch Auditorium for an equally noteworthy annual event, the 2010 Aquinas Lecture. The Aquinas Lecture, hosted by the University of Dallas philosophy department, is an important event in the life of the University. Held every year on or around the feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Aquinas Lecture brings a distinguished speaker to the University to speak on a philosophical topic usually related to the work of the Angelic Doctor.

SG introduces new event

The "Dinner with 12 Strangers" program was begun on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1961, and on the evening of Jan. 25, it became a part of the University of Dallas. Student Government President Justin Dugyon, in partnership with the National Alumni Board, sent three UD seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen along with faculty member Dr. Thomas Jodziewicz of the history department to the home of Jessica Mandala, secretary for the National Alumni Board and member of the UD class of 1998.

This may come as an unwelcome newsflash to seniors, but graduation is only months away. To those not planning to pursue higher education, Meghan Semmer-DiMauro would offer the advice of coming up with a marketing plan and beginning to network as soon as possible to facilitate the transition from student to member of the workforce.

Office Hours with Dr. Roper
Dr. Gregory Roper, associate professor of English, is currently teaching Literary Study II: Prose Fiction, more commonly known as "Senior Novel." He has spent eight semesters teaching on the Rome Campus, this semester being his first in Dallas after four consecutive semesters in Rome, and has taught at UD since 2000.
