The Best Buddies Club is hosting a Special Olympics event Oct. 16.
The field day will be inside the gym from 10 a.m. to noon, and will have games such as soccer, bowling, beanbag toss, relays, and dancing. This is a free event, and everyone is invited to cheer for the buddies. Prizes will be given to the winners, and refreshments will be provided for everyone.
"We just wanted to give the buddies something more active-let them get out and run around, and a chance to interact with others buddies and college buddies in a different way. Usually we have parties and a picnic in the spring and we wanted to do something different and more physical." Tory Morrow, president of the Best Buddies Club, said.
The club works with the Citizens Development Center in Dallas to pair college students with an adult who has mental and physical disabilities. The Citizens Development Center is a work site at which handicapped adults can perform simple jobs according to their abilities.
The Best Buddies Club just won the Outstanding Chapter Award for the third year in a row. To win the award, students had to submit an application detailing all the previous years' activities. Their application was chosen out of 800 schools worldwide.
Every month the club holds two events that allow students to get to know their buddies better.
Volunteers are needed for this Saturday, and anyone interested may call Morrow, at ext. 2913.
The Best Buddies Club is still looking for new members to pair with six more disabled adults. Access to a car is greatly encouraged since the adults often do not have any means of transportation.
