Christmas is arriving shortly, as the pages of The University News make amply clear this issue. And once we've all put aside our grumbling about the rank consumerism of the season, and we've all ceased moaning about how Christmas songs are being played in Macy's and on the radio as early as mid-October, we'll turn to more pressing matters and start buying gifts for friends and family that we really cannot afford. (Makes one almost wish a World's Greatest Dad pen were still a viable option for a 21-year-old to give.)
A subset of this university's student body should begin thinking about another type of gift as well. Seniors traditionally give the school a parting present each May in gratitude for the sweet succor the college has granted them the past four years. The types of gifts can change radically from year to year: One year's bold gift was a proposed grotto by the chapel which never materialized. Last year's was a humble but handy swing by the Fishbowl.
This year's early proposals include a University of Dallas sign by Hwy 114, a flagpole, and a scholarship fund set up in the class of 2006's name. It is a shame that at a senior class meeting last week held to discuss these different options, only about eight seniors showed up.
The senior class has raised quite a bit of money for the gift already, and has found many more opportunities for future fundraising. This would put the class of 2006 in a position of being able to grant a gift that would have a significant impact on the campus, whether it be through some structure or scholarship.
Seniors should give some time to thinking about what sort of gift would both best reflect their class and be most beneficial to the school, so that when May comes around, they won't be able to gripe that the class didn't go with their great idea. They can forward their suggestions to their senators in the Student Government office, or to the newspaper at udnews@udallas.edu.
