The University of Dallas Drama Department will present the last round of its Senior Studios this weekend. Moliere's Rehearsal at Versailles, directed by senior Rose White, and Sam Shepard's Action, directed by senior John Friedl, will run on a double bill April 27 through April 30.
Action, Shepard's last play written and produced in London, has be classified as post-absurdist, and, according to David J. Derose, professor of Theater Studies at St. Mary's College of Maryland, "exposes the lurking chaos and inherent violence of post modern society."
The play takes place in a cabin that has survived a recent apocalypse. The four people inside, Liza (sophomore Christine Murphy), Lupe (sophomore Rebecca Lopez), Shooter (senior Charles Cowen), and Jeep (sophomore Nick Rago), attempt to deal with their inhuman seclusion and avoid insanity in various ways. According to the press release, while Jeep pries up floorboards in a desperate attempt to escape, Shooter nestles himself in his self-constructed tortoise shell. Lupe stays in her armchair, and Liza tries to keep the whole gang hopeful, striving for a sense of comrarderie despite their helpless situation. Freshman Paul Arebalo Jr. stage managed the production.
Rehearsal at Versailles, on the opposite end of the spectrum, is Moliere's comedic defense of his comedy for the many French critics of the time.
"It was Moliere's way of saying, 'I won't condescend to give my critics the acknowledgement that they would like, but here's what I would say if I did.' It's a remarkably clever response which, knowing Moliere, isn't surprising at all," White said in a press release.
The play is based on Moliere's own life in an acting troupe. Moliere (senior Jonathan Aylor) and his actors are putting together a new play for Louis XIV, who is scheduled to arrive at any moment. Matters get complicated when Moliere has to juggle his former lover (senior Jill Farrington), his present mistress (junior Demarest Thompson), and his young wife (senior Margaret Abbott). La Thorilliere (junior James Bell), a vexing courtier, interferes as well.
"Have no fear," White said. "There will be slapstick."
Other cast members include freshmen Peter Appel, Jessica Barchus, and Timothy Dean; sophomore Tess Herbert; junior Jonathan Woods; and seniors Chris Jameson and Krista Raef.
Performances are scheduled to begin 8 p.m. Call the box office at (972) 721-5314 for reservations.
