Former University of Dallas professor, Dr. Joe Norton, was recently inducted into the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Hall of Fame. UD was named his associate school.
TIPA was founded in 1909 and is now the oldest, largest and most respected collegiate press associations and group in the country, according to the TIPA website, www.texasipa.org. The association began with just nine students on the Baylor University campus and made their goal "to improve college journalism, to raise the standard of college publications and to bring the colleges and editors into closer and more vital relationships."
Dr. Norton joins a prestigious group of advisers and editors from Texas Universities. While at UD, Dr. Norton advised the newspaper and yearbook, "rebuilding the journalism program as Visiting Professor of Journalism," according to his Hall of Fame Bio.
He worked for thirty years at Tarrant County College and at UD for six. He was chosen for the Hall of Fame because of the quality and longevity of his career.
"This honor was a wonderful topping for a rewarding career. The publications
I advised were always top quality and won many state and national awards," Norton said. "My experiences with UD students were positive and rewarding. Most of the students were topnotch writers, and working with them was a genuine pleasure."
After leaving UD, Norton is in complete retirement.
"[Retirement is] giving me time to pursue more fully other interests. I have had an interest in mission work for many years, and I have more time for hat now. I have been involved in missions in Ghana for the past 11 years but have worked in other African countries and in Mexico," he said
Dr. Norton's bio and picture can be accessed at the TIPA website mentioned above.
Congratulations to Dr. Norton for this prestigious honor.
