The golf team began its season last Monday in Alexandria, Louisiana, the site of the famed Louisiana College Invitational.
Upon arriving at the course, it became clear that the Crusaders had victory on their minds. Under the leadership of Coach Brian Stanfield, the golf team rumbled through a practice round ready to make a run for a win.
With some team members unable to travel, the team was led by reigning MVP Randy Buddenbohn, junior Stephen Klassen, and three unknowns, Kyle Callahan, Paul Bechter, and Cory Grant. The day started off well for the Crusaders with Buddenbohn leading the team off with a booming drive down the center.
However that was the highpoint of the day for the young team. The only thing on Monday stiffer than the wind, was the competition. Dallas had a rough day with scores ranging from 82 to a 97. The day was finished well by the final hole of Klassen.
After his first drive entered out-of-bounds, he overcompensated and pulled a drive into the water down the left side of the fairway. Taking his drop, Klassen looked posed to deliver a brilliant shot to the green, but that was not to be.
His approach was also in the water. Another drop and bunker shot later he was on the green in time to 2-putt for 10 (6 over par). While this was the highest score on a hole by any Crusader, it was not an uncommon story. The three freshmen played well for their first college tournaments, one of them putting up the low team score each day.
The second day provided much calmer conditions for the Crusaders. Once the first day scores had been posted they felt they were still in the hunt. The second day was more consistent for the Crusaders. The wind had calmed and so had the nerves.
Kyle Callahan led the way for the Crusaders, posting the low score of the day. With the Bermuda grass Paul Bechter felt right at home on the Links style course.
Cory Grant made great shots all day but was unable to put a run together. With the individual scores only varying by 5 shots in the second round, the Crusaders were a consistent team.
However, consistency is not always the key to victory and the Crusaders lost by a marginal amount to the overall champs, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Despite the narrow loss the Crusader team is confident in their skills and ready to take on the next challengers.
