Pop Culture Adopts Magnanimity, Controversy

Bad jokes aside, there really is something unnerving about all of this. It makes me very uncomfortable to see white celebrities going around the globe on lavish vacations and using the local color for photo ops. The argument will be made, of course, that our new friend David will have a better life in England with his new parents. There's some truth to that, sure. This does not give a green light-thanks all the same- to taking kids away from their parents. You can't do this even if you really, really, totally, like care about poverty. Care so very much, Madonna, yes you do!
All of this leaves me in a bad place. I love pop culture and all of the bright stars that shine in its cotton candy firmament. They make the movies and songs that I enjoy-we'd be lost without them. But why did Madonna (and Angelina Jolie as well) have to go do something like this. I like pop culture because I don't have to think about rich white people running around the third world and taking advantage of the shocked locals. Why did they have to go and remind me?
