In honor of Valentine's Day, the UD News decided to interview some of the faculty couples who work here in our lovely university. And here's what they had to say...
The Davies, David & Rebecca
1. How did the two of you meet?
"He was playing chess with a friend of mine at a sort of coffee house on campus. I found out he was interested in Classics and that was interesting to me because I had just returned from an archeology dig in England and was taking Latin. I wanted to talk about archeology. He wanted to talk about Wheelock. He pretended to be interested in archeology. I pretended to be interested in Wheelock. Twenty-five years later he developed a real expertise on Greek vases and interpreting archeological sites, and led the Greece trip while we lived in Rome. So he eventually did develop an interest in archeology. He won the chess game that evening by the way."
2. What initially drew you to your spouse?
"First it was a new face when I thought I knew everyone on campus. Second it was someone who wasn't afraid to actually call me up and ask me out on a date as opposed to all the "hanging out" friendships that never turned into anything more."
2. Where was your first date? Who paid?
"We went to see Citizen Kane on campus. To this day I don't know much about what happens in that movie. I don't remember who paid."
4. Was it love at first sight?
"Yes."
Is there such a thing?
"Yes."
5. How did you know?
"'You'll know when your love comes along...' (Do I need to tell undergraduates that's a song from Guys and Dolls?)"
6. Would you mind relating a favorite memory from your courtship?
"I was taking a Milton class. He sat in on [a Milton class I was taking]…I got a C on my Milton paper that spring because I was too in love to concentrate. I learned the hard way that love is no excuse for being sloppy when quoting Milton."
"Also, six months to the day after my birthday he made me a half-birthday cake and rode it over to me on a bicycle. It said:
