Letter to the Freshmen

Issue date: 9/25/07 Section: Commentary
On behalf of the senior class, we would like to extend a warm welcome to the largest freshman class ever to attend the University of Dallas. Your experience here will be satisfying, groundbreaking, and unforgettable.

Your career at UD will be tremendously rewarding. We can assure you of that fact, despite any feelings you might experience during freshman year. Almost everyone who attends UD does, at some point, doubt that this is the school for them. It is a normal reaction with which most of the upperclassman can sympathize.

Sometimes, this doubt sets in when you begin your first English class by reading a book that is thousands of years old. Other times it is when you discover that you are putting in far more work than your friends at Ivy Leagues are doing. In Mike's case, it was when he had to define a "point" in geometry without using the words dot, spot, place or period (Hey, for a Politics major, that is incredible frustrating). In Tommy's case, it was when his philosophy professor repeatedly insisted on asking him what the meaning of "is" is. Inevitably, the UD core will seem odd at times.

What we can already promise you is that this is one of the best educations in the country. University of Dallas students are recognized across the country for their intelligence, depth, and willingness to confront any subject crossing their path. This last attribute is a testament to the fact that we study every subject-and study to succeed. This past summer we both landed highly competitive internships. Between the two of us, we have worked at prestigious institutions such as the White House, the Heritage Foundation, and the U.S. Senate. And we are just entering our senior years.

We are not writing to brag, because we are no different from the many other students here-striding through doors opened by our education and limited only by our dreams and ambitions. It is a fantastic position to find oneself in and this position is possible only through our world-class education.
