The University of Dallas celebrated Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 13. From 7:30 p.m. to midnight, the area under the tower was filled with German spirit.

This year, Oktoberfest coincided with Parent's weekend, and the festivities offered something for everyone. T-shirts were sold in three varieties for $10 and Oktoberfest mugs were only $3.

The same table held an assortment of sweets, which represented both sides of the Atlantic. On the American side were cookies of all sorts, brownies and cupcakes. The German side had Apfelkuchen (apple cake), Platzchen (thin sugar cookies) and Krapfan (German donuts). All the desserts were inexpensive.

On the other side of mall was the Beer Garden for those 21 and older. Bud Light and ZiegenBock were on tap. Soda was also available for those outside the garden. Pretzels were on sale for $1 and bratwurst with sauerkraut for $2.

Directly underneath the tower was the main attraction of the evening: Brave Combo. The band had a table set up on the Mall, where they sold many of their CDs and shirts, which advertised their new album Polka's Revenge.

Staffing the Brave Combo table was Elizabeth Fitzpatrick who described herself as Brave Combo's biggest fan. According to Fitzpatrick, Brave Combo has approximately 20 albums and has won two Grammy awards. They have been together for 27 years.

The band is from Denton, Texas and has also made a guest appearance on "The Simpsons," playing themselves at the Simpsons' Oktoberfest.

Before the band started playing, polka lessons were given to the steadily growing crowd. The crowd, which grew to a steady 300 or so, began doing the polka as soon as Brave Combo started playing.

Feedback from the crowd was positive. Molly and Tracy Massey, parents visiting for the weekend, said that the event showed "good integration of all the classes. It really gives a good impression of the school."

Senior Katie Andrzejewski said that it was one of the best she's been to and it's the band that keeps her coming back.

Oktoberfest was surely a big success for 2007 and was, as the Germans say, wunderbar!
