Despite their youth, the 2007-2008 Crusader's women basketball team are not shying away from any challenges.

The team, consisting of only three returning seniors, one junior, and nine freshmen proved to be no pushover in the Bob Mason Tournament at Austin College, in Sherman, Texas.

UD opened their season against Macalester College on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, followed by Curry College on Saturday, Nov. 17. In both games the Crusaders demonstrated heart and passion. Each game was action packed and full of excitement.

In game one against Macalester, senior point-guard, Shanie Cardinal led the team in scoring with a total of 22 points. Freshmen forwards Joirdan Cole, and Cara Sczepanski also scored in the double digits. The game remained close for the entire 40 minutes. At the half, Macalester led by two, at 28-26.

In the second half, Dallas came out strong looking for a victory. Composure was never lost, even though the lead changed 13 times. With 41 seconds remaining in the game, UD called a timeout. The score was 63-61, in Macalester's favor.

Coming out of the timeout, freshman Amy King passed the ball to Shanie Cardinal for a three pointer, putting the Crusaders up by one point. Macalester went down the court, turned the ball over, then fouled.

They called a timeout of their own with only 7 seconds left in the game. Cardinal hit both fouls shouts, boosting the Crusaders lead to three points. With possession of the ball, Macalester took and missed a three-point shot, but was then fouled on the rebound by Sczepanski with one second left on the clock. UD called a timeout, and listened intently as Coach Fleming discussed what needed to happen if Macalester made the foul shots. The first Macalester foul shot was good, decreasing the Dallas lead to two points. The next shot missed but was rebounded and put back up by a Macalester player. That jumper was also missed, ending the game with a final score of University of Dallas 66, Macalester College 64.

The game against Curry College had just as much excitement. Curry jumped out in a press, forcing Dallas to handle the ball and make quick decisions. The pressure was intense, and the Crusaders had to work hard to keep the lead for the majority of the game. At half time, the score was University of Dallas 35, Curry College 31.

Again, Curry pressured, trapping the ball every possible play. Never giving up, the Crusaders fought hard until the end, giving a valiant effort to win the game, 68-62.
Curry College had one stand out player, Danyel Cousins who scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds.

Again, Shanie Cardinal led the Crusaders in baskets. She scored 19 points in the second game of the tournament. Freshmen Erika Derks and Cara Sczepanski also had some impressive stats for the second game of the seaso. Derks scored 15 points, while Sczepanski put up 13 of her own. Sczepanski also had a team high of 11 rebounds for the game.

All in all, the weekend was a success for the Women's basketball team, and hopefully the Crusaders can take this winning energy into the rest of the season.
