SPUD Seeks Volunteers

Issue date: 12/11/07 Section: News
As the days of December rapidly draw to a close, University of Dallas students are looking forward to neatly packaging the events of 2007 into memory and to plunging headfirst into the possibilities of 2008. Those students seeking to use the opportunity the New Year affords to become more involved around campus should look no further than SPUD, which is currently seeking individuals to help run their events for the spring semester.

SPUD stands for Student Programming at UD. It has a board of 8 directors who meet weekly to plan the various events put on throughout the year. As the programming branch of the Student Government, its main task is to host the much the beloved events of Oktoberfest, Battle of the Bands, Groundhog, Mallapalooza and Spring Formal. SPUD also is also responsible for Cap House, Spring and Fall Lectures, Bradford Debate, Music on the Mall and, of course, TGIT. In short, SPUD volunteers help coordinate many of the fun events that make UD its quirky self. This coming spring in particular, they have a special need for volunteers for the three chair positions that are opening up.

According to SPUD vice president Chelsea Davis, "We are just rearranging directors due to changes and students going to and returning from Rome. We need a new Sound chair to run sound for all SPUD events. The other two positions are Associate (they are in charge of running Music on the Mall every Friday; they can decide whether they want to delegate or supervise themselves) and Academics (they will take over the planning of the spring lecture series, the Bradford Debate, the Ruskin Rhetoric Competition, and Last Chance lectures.)"

Besides these positions, Davis says that SPUD is always looking for volunteers to help with running sound at events, music on the mall, decorating for dances, selling tickets and t-shirts or other volunteer jobs. She adds, "I would like to see anyone who is interested in helping out with all of the fun events they enjoy participating in get involved with SPUD."
