It was yet again a pleasant day on the rugby pitch this last weekend as your UD Hoggies trounced the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a 15-0 victory in this year's third Cup Match of the season. With excellent play by the forwards and a somewhat decent effort from their backs, UD slowly-but surely-lurched their way up the field, despite the formidable opposition they faced. Watching your UD men battle it out, it is indeed clear that this is the greatest team in sports history; such play is now expected of UD, and people have been asking the question: Could this be the year that the Hoggies bring home a Northern Texas Rugby Association first place trophy?

UD got off to a slow start in a somewhat atypical first half. A mixture of brainless penalties and poor passing enabled the Lumberjacks to appear at times to have the upper hand against the Hoggies. Indeed, the first moments of the game were characterized by strong defensive play on both sides of the field, coupled with stupid offensive mistakes. Neither team seemed to be overtaking the other. With the arrival, however, of freshman forward Thomas "Gumby" Whisenant, it appeared UD found the burst of energy that they were looking for in the young man's spectacular run. The skinny twig of a player squeezed himself past the tri-line in a riveting display of athleticism; at the end of the half, UD seemed fired up and ready to play honest rugby; hail Zulu warrior.

Not to be outdone, however, Stephen F. Austin continued to ruck and maul with a tenacious spirit in the second-half. Indeed, if it had not been for the fighting strength of UD's hooker Joshua "You-can't-afford-me" Mahan and his posse of stellar forwards, fortune may not have smiled on UD that day. But with presence and dignity, these men of steel tackled the hearts and bodies of their opposing force with ruthless abandon, ensuring that no Lumberjack could advance the ball.

Such strong play making one ask: could anything but the hand of God himself stop these Crusaders? For with another tri scored by professional pizza-maker Travis "Cooking" Cook, the fate of Saturday's match was sealed. But as the Hoggies have a short amount of time left before playoff season begins, one wonders if they can keep this tendency for victory alive? Stay tuned, and see how good this team gets.
