The University of Dallas Women's Lacrosse team split in their last weekend of play. Despite the disappointing 20-17 loss to Adrian College on Sunday, the ladies had an eventful weekend. The win of 11-3 on Saturday against Tri-State University put the Crusaders on a two-game winning streak, having beat Sewanee on April 6. Freshman Christine McFarland also added to the excitement, setting a new school record of nine goals in one game.
McFarland has been leading the team all year in number of goals scored, and it has come to no surprise that she now sits on top of the record books at the University of Dallas. "Everyone played well, creating plenty of opportunities for me to score," Christine pointed out. The record, previously held at seven by assistant coach "Cali," Meghan Braun, was tied by senior captain Johanna Weston in the same game McFarland broke it. Weston is the only four year senior on the women's lacrosse team. "I could go two more games," Jo commented after the game against Adrian College. Also joining Jo in the graduating class are seniors Laura Jura (Jurtle) and Kate Gallagher.
All three seniors worked really hard to get Dallas to its top level of game at the end of the season. Junior captains Cindy Parks and Becky Harris also contributed to the overall success of the team. Harris, recapping the season said, "We started with a team of mostly freshmen-many of whom never played before. We ended the season with a team of girls who not only knew how to play the sport but were playing well."
Freshmen standout successes aside from McFarland include Jenny Kautzky, Clare Chadwick, Natalie Koch, Anna Massey, and Alex Weston. Jenny's improvement overall reflects through the stats of not only draw controls but also goals scored. In the last three games Kautzky collected three total goals. Clare Chadwick has become an anchor defender for Dallas. Chadwizzy has been matching up, face guarding, and handling opposing team's best defenders. Joining Clare, holding back behind the restraining line is Natalie Koch. Koch said, "Being a defender is challenging due to the great responsibilities, but the reward of caused turnovers and successful transitions makes it worth all the hard work." Finally, the last point of defense is goalie Anna Massey. Massey started the season having never played before and ended the season racking up saves. Switching to the opposite side of the field, Alex Weston represents the freshmen class on attack. "I came to the team with basically zero lacrosse skill, and with the help and encouragement of my sister, my skills have improved dramatically and I have fallen in love with the sport!"
