On Thursday night, Kanye West's Glow in the Dark Tour came to Dallas. The Tour included three star-studded opening acts, Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D., and Rihanna. Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D. proved to be crowd pleasers, but due to their early time slots, a majority of the concert-goers were not present for their shows. When Rihanna took the stage at 9:00 p.m., the venue was filled and definitely not disappointed with her performance. The highlight of Rihanna's show came with her most recent hit, "Don't Stop the Music" which included light-sabers and numerous dancers. Finally at 10:00 p.m., Kanye West took the stage to perform.
West's show revolved around a story that involved him being on a spaceship that crashed. He was responsible for finding his way back home with the help of a robot named Jane. The concert showed a side of Kanye West that many fans never expected to see. Fellow concert-goer Jenny Kautzy commented, "I never expected Kanye to be so emotional, but it was really great and proved to me how much he really cares about his music and fans." One of the highlights of the concert focused on a song from his first album, "College Dropout" titled "Hey Mama." West's mother passed away last year, and he performed a touching tribute to her that fans, including me, were not expecting.
It is extremely difficult to point out one overall highlight from West's show because the entire concert was so well done. However, definite fan favorites were popular songs such as "Jesus Walks," "Gold Digger," and the closing song, "Stronger." Kanye West appeared to have the most fun performing "The Good Life", lengthening the song by around five minutes and encouraging the fans to keep singing while he danced on stage.
While other newspapers in the area, such as The Dallas Morning News, stated that West appeared too arrogant during the show and pleased only his fans, one might stop and wonder who West is supposed to be pleasing if not his fans. West appeared to sincerely enjoy being on the stage and taking his fans on an "out-of-this" world journey.
Kanye West's concert proved to be everything one could imagine and more. West is not only an incredible rapper, but has a captivating presence on stage, and has an original performance with no need to share the stage because he is more than capable of holding his own. One will be hard pressed to find another concert this summer with as much energy, outstanding performances, and unique overall production as the Glow in the Dark Tour. In my opinion, I would love to see West again this summer and will.
