On Nov. 4, 2008, the Robert A. Welch Foundation announced a grant of $105,000 to the University of Dallas Chemistry Department, a continuation of the support the foundation has given the University since 1987. According to the Welch Foundation website, "The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, Texas, is one of the United States' oldest and largest private funding sources for basic chemical research. Since its founding in 1954, the organization has contributed to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs, visiting lectureships and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas." According to chemistry department head Dr. Bill Hendrickson, this is the eighth time the department has received the award. Hendrickson says that the grant "will be used to support research." He adds, "Normally this research is done during the summer. The grant pays a stipend ($3500) for students to work with a professor for 10 weeks. We usually support between two and four students. This year we are purchasing a new gas chromatograph to replace the one we bought 10 years ago. The cost is about $16,000." In addition, the chemistry department will use the Welch foundation grant to help pay for their nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and to buy a centrifuge for the biochemistry lab. The grant is for a three-year period from June 1, 2009, to May 31, 2112.
