It was a disappointing weekend for the women's basketball team as the Crusaders lost to both the University of the Ozarks (62-50) and George Fox University (44-77) while playing at home in the UD Tip Off Tournament. These losses mark the continuation of a 0-3 season in which UD was unable to play consistent defense and make lasting offensive contributions. As the lady Crusaders continue their season, the team hopes for a defining victory against the Hendrix College Warriors when they host the team on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.
UD's first match against the University of Ozarks was an infuriating loss. In their first home game of the season, the Crusaders came out strong in the first half, leading the Ozarks 28-18. With a 45 percent shooting percentage from the field, the Crusaders appeared to be unstoppable. But in the second half, UD struggled defensively and allowed 44 points. Likewise, UD shot only 22 percent and closed the game with a difficult 44-22 loss. Notable players in this game were sophomore forward Cara Sczepanski who dominated with 21 points and freshman guard Lauren Wilder with 16 points. Also recognized with an impressive defensive play were sophomore forward Joirdan Cole and Meagan Johnson who both took down 10 and 7 rebounds respectively.
UD's second game against George Fox University was likewise a difficult game for the Crusaders. Down by 14 in the half, George Fox casually controlled the tempo of the game. With a fantastic defensive effort George Fox clamped down on UD and made scoring impossible holding UD to 28.6 percent from the field. Thus, the Bruins outscored the Crusaders by a disappointing 19 points in the second half and claimed a 33 point victory. In this game, leading scorer Cara Sczepanski took away 16 points and Lauren Wilder added 12.
Women's basketball continues their season looking forward to a win. Hopefully, with the support of their fans and improved defensive efforts the team can manage to pull themselves out of this slump and into victory.
