UD men's basketball struggled this weekend in a difficult game against Hardin Simmons University in a 75-62 defeat. In the first game of the Austin College Mason Classic UD's men played poorly in the first half and only came alive in the second. As UD continues their 1-3 season they look forward to their next game against East Texas Baptist University on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. in their second game of competition in the Austin College Mason Classic.
UD's shooting in the first half led to their eventual downfall. Indeed, the Crusaders went 19 for 67 in the first half and had a 28.3 shooting percentage. It was this kind of effort that lead to this eventual downfall, and which made victory impossible. As senior captain and point guard Anthony Garrett remarked, "The first half was where we made a lot of our mistakes. Hopefully in the future we can handle those problems right away and start strong."
Even so, the game's second half was much more impressive than their first. UD was able to make strong defensive efforts and shoot much higher percentages. Indeed, junior forward Peter Popovich scored a strong 18 points and shot an impressive 50 percent for the night. Likewise, forward Travis Ekmark led the team in teals with three and blocks with two. Furthermore, senior guards Jeff Pritchard and Anthony Garrett gave the team half of their assists in a game where only 14 were made.
Thus as the Crusaders face East Texas Baptist University on Saturday, the team looks forward for a chance to redeem themselves. Hopefully with solid defense and a stronger offense the team can improve their standing and bring in a much needed victory.
