A win and a loss for UD Men's Basketball

The University of Dallas men's basketball team had an interesting past week, loosing to Southwestern University 68-43 and beating Rhodes College in a close game, 62-60. As the men continue their season, they do so with a difficult 2-7 record. But it is with great hope that this last win will motivate the Crusaders to defeat Rhodes College again and increase their win count as the team will play the Lynxes for the second time, here at the University of Dallas on Dec. 20 3 p.m.
The first game the team played against Southwestern University was a difficult game to watch. Poor post coverage enabled Southwestern's big men to tear apart the defense UD had built up. UD fell behind early and found that a comeback was impossible; at the end of the first half the Crusaders had a solid 25 point difference between themselves and the Pirates. Such a deficit proved too much for the UD men, and despite the admirable 13 points that Jim Norton put down, the men's crusaders found that it wasn't enough to lock in victory.
In contrast, UD's second game against Rhodes College proved to be much more enjoyable than the first. Despite past problems with poor starts, UD came out to play straight from the start; when the first half was finished they found themselves only down by two in a tight 24-26 ballgame. UD's capacity as strong finishers made sure of a victory. With a solid first half under their belts, the Crusaders casually controlled the tempo of the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field and making a season low of 11 turnovers.
And perhaps the only downside to this second game was the many blocks Hagen 'Credit Card?' Hohlfeld received at the hands of Rhodes' 6'11 post. With an exceptional 22 points from Jim Norton, and another 12 by point guard Jeff Pritchard, the University of Dallas had the necessary scorers to win the ball game. Furthermore, UD is to be commended as they kept their cool during the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
This victory ends the team's six game loosing streak; and it is a high point for a team playing with an under .500 record. Perhaps this win will give the men's Crusaders the necessary confidence to pull out themselves out of their slump. Please join the team in their next game on Dec. 20 and cheer them on to a winning season.
