UN: What kind of projects is the economics department working on these days?

WD: Our main project right now is improving comprehensive exams for the economics majors. My own personal project is an article I'm writing over financial innovation and capital structure.

UN: What is your opinion on the recent economic stimulus package passed by Congress?

WD: I think that overall it is a good idea, and is necessary to prevent the economy from getting worse than it already is. I also think that it will make the tax code fairer, which is good. However, I believe that it is largely aimed at restoring an economic normalcy that is not there anymore, that simply does not exist. The economy needs to be restructured, and people are going to have to get used to spending less.

UN: What are you reading these days?

WD: I'm reading something that I think is really tremendous, "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. It's one of the best books I've ever read, period.

UN: What is your favorite hobby?

WD: I would have to say listening to music. I just love it. I'm not into genre really. I'm more into artists. If I had a type I really like, I would have to say I prefer shoe-gaze. It's really noisy music that is pop-oriented, from the early 90s.

UN: What is your most intense traveling experience?

WD: Three years ago, I was flying from Montana to Dallas and had a connecting flight in Denver. We arrived in Denver okay, but in the middle of a snowstorm, and my flight to Dallas was cancelled. It was absolutely necessary that I get to Dallas, and I was so desperate that I started offering people money to buy their seats on other flights. I was making so much ruckus that I was detained, searched and questioned by airport security. I ended up getting to Dallas on time, but it was just really frantic there for a little bit.

UN: If you could move the economics department out of the basement, where would you move it to?

WD: I wouldn't. I really love it here. My office is always cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. It's also very quiet and the light is nice and soft.

UN: If you could improve UD in any way, what would it be?

The only thing I would do to change UD is raise faculty salary-because everything else is great.

UN: What is your advice to students?

WD: Never miss an opportunity to show compassion, love and mercy towards others, because, "As you give, so shall you receive."
