The University of Dallas National Alumni Board (NAB) has decided to recognize an outstanding senior boy and girl with class rings. The University News conducted an interview with a member of the NAB, Curtis Downs ('93), concerning the NAB's decision to award an outstanding senior boy and girl with class rings.

UN: How did this idea come up?

CD: Earlier on, when I had come to visit Dr. Lazarus, I picked up a copy of the University News. I read a story of a girl who generously volunteered her time to help students from the UD sports teams. I realized then that there were many UD students who may be average students but exemplify the UD spirit.

UN: Who can nominate the senior boy and girl?

CD: The nominations are open to everyone at UD: faculty, staff, students (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior). In other words, anyone here at UD, including the custodial staff, can nominate a senior boy or girl.

UN: What are the necessary qualifications of those who are nominated?

CD: The winners do not need a 4.0 or to be captain of the softball team. Rather, we are looking for someone who exemplifies the UD spirit, which is not limited to any specific qualifications. The University of Dallas National Alumni Board Senior Ring Award is an award to be given each year to an outstanding senior girl and boy who exemplifies the qualities of the University of Dallas: a deep love of God and family, a commitment to learning and scholarship, loyalty to friends, a concern and compassion for anyone in trouble or in need and an efficiency in carrying out any task undertaken.

UN: How does one nominate a senior?

CD: To nominate a student, write a short summary (bulleted or in prose) of why the senior boy or girl should win this award. This nomination can highlight the intellectual, social, ethical or spiritual qualities of the student. Email the nomination to me, Curtis Downs at ud1956@gmail.com by May 1, 2009.

UN: Who decides the winner of this award?

CD: A committee from the National Alumni Board will decide the winners.

UN: When will the winners receive their award?

CD: A certificate will be presented at graduation. If they already have a senior ring they will be reimbursed. If not, they will be sized and the ring will be shipped to them.

The National Alumni board is an elected board that is a conduit between the board of trustees and the alumni of the University of Dallas. The NAB hopes to start a continuing tradition of awarding students with the ring and requests that the nominations of these exemplary UD student be sent in by May 1.
