Last week, the University of Dallas men's basketball endured what can only be described as a roller coaster ride, journeying from Southern California to Marshall, Texas, winning soundly, losing badly and everything in between.
In the Independent's round robin tournament hosted at La Sierra University, the Crusaders started hot by pounding La Sierra 79-58. Senior forward Travis Ekmark piled up 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while the team had five players reach double digit points.
The next day, a 36-3 first half score doomed UD to a 61-29 loss at the hands of Chapman University. The team was held to a 21 percent field goal percentage and managed just 42 percent from the free throw line.
The Crusaders, to their credit, dug deep to stay competitive in the second half and gave themselves enough momentum to pull out a win in their next game against University of California, Santa Cruz. Senior guard Jim Norton scored 20 points, hauled in nine rebounds and made both his foul shots with two seconds left, one to tie it, and one seal the 58-57 victory.
Six days later, UD fell behind early and never recovered against East Texas Baptist University in their 78-56 loss. ETBU had their way with the defense, sinking half of their shots from the field as the Crusaders simply couldn't keep up.
With just six games left on the schedule, UD will host its first true home game in over two months this Sunday.
