This spring, Dr. Scott Churchill of the psychology department is giving a class on "Film, Fantasy and Dreams." Though the class is closed for the semester, students can still come and watch the films that are shown every Monday night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium and participate in the discussion on their psychological implications.
The theme of the class has much to do with the films shown, as Churchill chose ones that either have a dream-like quality, that trick viewers into mistaking fantasy for reality, or that have surprise endings, like "Jacob's Ladder," "Swimming Pool" and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Each discussion will center on how the audience is captivated and tricked, what symbols and camera angles can be used as "clues" and how the movie-watching experience can be likened to dreaming.
So feel free to come next Monday to explore the hidden world of film and learn about what goes on in your own mind while you watch it.
